Hi, I’m Nicole. I’m an educator, writer, and web developer based in Portland, Oregon.

Scrapped Princess Production Art Gallery

Lucuru hosts my digital archive dedicated to the preservation and documentation of production artifacts from the Scrapped Princess animation series. I restored, scanned, and edited over 8,000 pieces of genga, douga, storyboards, and scripts from the anime and created the gallery website using the Astro javascript framework.

Archiving

I bought my first Scrapped Princess douga during a trip to Japan in 2014. In the decade since then, I’ve managed to collect thousands of other pieces of production materials from the anime. Most of my collection came from second hand shops and online auction websites, and a few pieces were generously donated to me from staff that worked on the anime. As of 2025, I have a piece of production material from every episode in the series as well as the opening and ending sequences.

I began archiving my collection in 2022. My archival process begins with scanning or photographing specific pieces. Scripts and storyboards are standardized (A4 size), so they are able to be scanned in flatbed scanners. Douga and genga come in various shapes and sizes, and some of the larger pieces like those from the ending sequence of the anime need to be photographed. After being digitized, I add metadata to each raw image file containing information based on VRA Core standards. Finally, I place the archived piece in an acid-free bag or box for long-term storage.

As I have thousands of pieces in my collection that continues to grow larger each year, my archival work is an ongoing process. I try to update my gallery website at least once a week.

Web Development

I created a digital gallery for my collection using the Astro web framework for its potential to create fast loading static sites with built-in image optimization. To streamline the development process, I created a custom script based on exif-parser that reads the metadata of the images in my collection and generates markdown files. The markdown files allow each image to be searched and sorted by attribute including type and episode number.
